Safe (detail of installation for Safe video)

Media: Single channel video | 2008

In 2008, when this work was created the housing market crash was imminent. While creating the work, I considered the analogous circumstances at the current times to when the gallery’s former life as a bank was also on the precipice of disaster when only opening in 1928, one year before the stock market crash of Black Monday in 1929.

The installation was completed in the main space of a gallery and former bank. The resulting video stands as a work onto itself. “Safe” incorporates remnants of the banks security deposit boxes and platform legs used in the gallery’s space. Actual and coincidental relationships between the present and past use of the space are explored sculpturally.
